Los jefes de gobierno reunidos en Londres para asistir a la Cumbre de los G-20 están discutiendo asuntos serios y de alto nivel que, en su momento, serán ampliamente difundidos a nivel mundial. Pero, en este momento, la prensa británica está extasiada ante el tamaño descomunal del séquito con el cual viaja el Presidente Obama. Y no es para menos.
Obama llegó seguido por 500 miembros de su personal, incluyendo 200 agentes del Servicio Secreto, un equipo de seis médicos, el Chef de la Casa Blanca y un personal de cocina que trae consigo la comida y hasta el agua que consumirá el señor presidente.
Y, según el Evening Standard, “vino además con un total de 35 vehiculos, cuatro redactores de discursos y doce teleprompters”. Sin dudas el señor presidente tendrá mucho que decir.
Asimismo, la prensa ofreció una información detallada sobre el “Air Force One” con todos sus sofisticados artefactos incluyendo el helicóptero del presidente, “Marine One”, así como una flota de helicópteros señuelos para confundir a potenciales terroristas y facilitar su traslado seguro del aeropuerto de Stansted al centro de Londres.
Entre todos esos vehículos se encontraba el limousine presidencial, que un periódico local llamó por error “Cadillac One” pero que es conocido universalmente como “La Bestia”. El limo, que esta reforzado con blindaje de cerámica y titanio, lleva un cañón de gas lacrimógeno, artefactos de visión nocturna, su propia reserva de oxígeno y es capaz de resistir cualquier ataque químico o radioactivo. Según dijo un reportero, puede ser considerado como un “rodante cuarto de pánico”. El Guardian lo llamó “lo mas elaborado en transporte blindado”.
Es innegable que el presidente tiene derecho a toda la seguridad, todos los medios de comunicación y todo el apoyo que considere necesario para llevar a cabo su trabajo. Pero, en un momento en que estamos tratando de proyectar una imagen más moderada y humilde al mundo, la comitiva del presidente podría ser reducida a algo menos que la marcha triunfal de la ópera Aída.

Are discussing serious and weighty issues, which in time
Will be duly reported on, but right now the British press is
Entranced by the sheer size of President Obama's traveling
Entourage, and no wonder!
Obama arrived with 500 staff in tow, including 200 Secret
Service agents, a team of 6 doctors, the White House chef
And kitchen staff with the presidents own food and water.
And according to the Evening Standard "he also came with
35 vehicles in all, 4 speech writers and 12 teleprompters."
For sure our president is not going to be at a loss for words.
The press duly reported on Air Force One and all it's bells
and whistles but also the presence of the Presidents
helicopter, Marine One, a fleet of identical decoys to carry
him from the Stansted airport to Central London.
Among all those vehicles is the Presidental limousine, which
One local paper mistakenly called Cadillac One but is
Universally referred to as The Beast. The Limo which is
Reinforced with ceramic and titanium armor, carries tear gas
Cannon, night vision devices and it's own oxygen and is
Resistant to chemical and radiation attack. It is marveled one
Reporter a sort of mobile panic room. The Guardian called it
"the ultimate in heavily armored transport."
The president is entitled to all the security, communications
And support he feels necessary to do his job, but surely, when
we're trying to project a more restrained, humble image to the
world, the president's huge retinue could be scaled back to
something less than the triumphal march from Aida. |
